July 11, 2006 Dr. Manmohan Singh Dear Prime Minister Singh, I am writing on behalf of the Muslim Canadian Congress to offer my deepest condolences to you, the people of India and above all the families of those who died in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai today. We condemn this cowardly and barbaric act of terrorism without reservation. We consider this action as a crime against humanity. Those responsible for the bombings of the Mumbai trains are individuals devoid of all humanity. We feel the real aim of the terrorists is to create a communal crisis in India and we hope they will not be allowed to succeed in their attempts to sow hatred among the various communities of your great nation. The Mumbai bombings also seem to be an attempt to derail the growing friendship between the people of India and Pakistan. We have confidence that your government will not succumb to the temptation of stalling peace talks between the two countries. The best way to fight international terrorism and religious extremism is to continue steadfastly along the path of peace, reconciliation, pluralism and democracy. As Muslim Canadians we support the advances made by India in establishing a secular and democratic society. We are confident that Indians will rise to the occasion and come out stronger as role models for the rest of the world. However, we are also cognisant of the presence in India of right-wing communalist forces that target minorities at every opportunity. We hope such sectarian forces will not be permitted to exploit this tragedy to sow division among India's Hindus and Muslims and other minorities. In closing, let me assure you that Muslim Canadians stand in solidarity with your government and the people of India in their hour of grief. Yours truly cc. |
